Wooden grave 'stone', St Paul's Witherslack
I have never come across a wooden headstone before. This one is propped against the retaining wall of the graveyard and may have once occupied the plinth I sat on to take this picture. The lettering is weathered and seems only to carry the simplest message: 'Mary Ann Widdows born Mar 5th 1843 died Nov 26th 1935'. I wonder why wood and no expressions of loss or fond memory. Perhaps, aged 92, Mary Ann had outlived all her family? If this photograph lives on in a database it may well outlast the wood.
