Tuft of fungi - probably Armillaria
Tuft of fungi - probably Armillaria
There are two similar species of Armillaria which grow on and attack trees; the well-known A. mellea (Honey fungus, bootlace fungus) and A. gallica. They are both very bad news for the host trees causing an intense white rot which eventually kills the tree. The two species are quite difficult to tell apart from a viewpoint such as this, if indeed I have correctly identified this tuft as being of the Armillaria genus. Both species are more often seen clustering around the base of their victim host, but I believe they can be found higher on the trunk such as seen here. A. mellea in particular can vary a lot in appearance, and there has been some talk that fungi referred to as "mellea" might actually belong to distinct subspecies, or even separate species.
The caps of this example are a more pinky russet than I would expect from either A. mellea or A. gallica for instance.
If anyone can ID this fungus definitively, I would welcome any feedback.
[Edit] Another possibility is A. solidipes, syn. A. ostoyae LinkExternal link suggested by John Myers LinkExternal link
