The board says:

The Wash is the UK's most important estuary for wildlife. Up to 400,000 birds feed and roost here every winter. It has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1972.

The vast mudflats in The Wash are a gourmet dining table for the birds. They're packed with molluscs and worms, which the birds feed on. And there are enough out there to support huge numbers of shelducks, oystercatchers, golden plovers, lapwings, knots, dunlins, black-tailed godwits, bar-tailed godwits, curlews and redshanks.

Many of the birds that use The Wash have migrated up to 4,000 miles (7,000 kilometres) to spend the winter here. Others are just stopping to rest and feed before continuing an even longer migration down to West Africa.

The saltmarsh surrounding The Wash is also a vitally important habitat. During the summer, the songs of the skylark and meadow pipit drift down from their lofty song flights, while the small birds of the winter can include Lapland buntings from the mountains and tundra of Scandinavia, and twites from the southern Pennines.

You can get a close look at developing saltmarsh elsewhere on the reserve. The realignment area behind the old sea bank, which was breached deliberately in 2002, is now home to 65 hectares of this valuable habitat.
