Dropping down into the valley of the River Itchen we are about to pass under a footbridge that marks the route of the now dismantled Winchester to New Alresford railway line. Hiding in the gloom of the cutting is the bridge carrying the B3047 over the motorway. The buildings on the other side of the valley are located on Long Walk.
