Limestone quarry
Limestone quarry
The face of an abandoned limestone quarry near to Mynydd Isaf. Exploitation of the limestone in these gently-dipping strata also encountered the Craig Rofft Sandstone (brownish material in the distant exposure) which seems to pinch-out and disappear in this area (see also SH7783 : Craig Rofft Sandstone). The sandstone was only a few metres thick at maximum, so its presence may explain the wide area of spoil heaps remaining from when the quarry was working. The limestone and sandstone belong to the Carboniferous (Asbian to Brigantian) Cefn Mawr Limestone Formation which also outcrop at Bishop's Quarry (SH7682 : Bishops Quarry).
