Steynton church from south
The original church was probably C13. A major restoration in 1882 removed the original features and was described as 'mutilating' but during the rebuilding some interesting finds were made: 3 horse skulls, a human skull and a pike head under the chancel and human thighbones in cavities within each pillar of the arcade. Also an Ogham stone and remains of prehistoric graves. Subsequently a headless body of a Cromwellian soldier was discovered during work on the vicarage next door, and is buried in the churchyard in a grave marked MOW (Man of War!)
