TQ5100 : Old Course of the Cuckmere River

taken 4 years ago, near to Westdean, East Sussex, Great Britain

Old Course of the Cuckmere River
Old Course of the Cuckmere River
The line of bushes either side mark out a former meander in the river that was straightened sometime between 1783 and 1813. The depression in the ground can just about be made out though it is better observed after a prolonged wet spell when it fills. The old loop is still used as a boundary between Lewes and Wealden district councils. This loop lies about a hundred yards to the south of another, see TQ5100 : Old Course of the Cuckmere River. Friston Forest is visible beyond.
