The abbey ruins are in the care of English Heritage. The entrance is from the adjacent car park. This was an Augustinian abbey which is believed to date from the early 12th century. It was dissolved in 1539 and gradually fell into ruin, especially as it was plundered for its building stone over the years. Today there are still fairly extensive remains of the abbey, including its abbots' quarters, refectory and cloister. The substantially surviving chapter house still has its roof dating from around 1500.
