Moffat Ram
Moffat Ram
Or "Billy", as he's known in our family. Long ago, while driving through Moffat, my Borders-born wife recited:

Where the pools are bright and deep,
Where the grey trout lies asleep,
Up the river and over the lea,
That's the way for Billy and me.

I asked her who'd written that and she replied "James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd". Now, knowing the lonely life of a shepherd, I just assumed his little companion in the poem must have been of the woolly variety. It took several more drive pasts, repeat recitations and my exclaiming excitedly, "There's Billy!" before my faux pas was pointed out - but he's been "Billy" ever since!
