Fort Hubberston, Milford Haven
Fort Hubberston, Milford Haven
Not accessible to the public, the remains of Fort Hubberston (or Hubberston Fort) are on high ground overlooking Gelliswick Bay. A nearby information board records that the Napoleonic Wars and the French invasion of Fishguard in 1797 resulted in steps being taken to protect both the Royal Dockyard and the Haven. In 1814 the Royal Dockyard was moved from Milford to Pater (now Pembroke Dock). By 1875, 11 coastal defence forts, including this one, had been built along the Haven. They were known locally as Palmerston's Follies.

Hubberston Fort was altered in 1900 to include an open battery. Milford Waterway was the gateway for the western approaches, and was a convoy assembly point during the Second World War. In 1944 American forces built a transit hospital on the bank behind the fort, for the casualties expected from the D-Day landings.

Hubberston Fort is now owned by Milford Haven Port Authority.
