Pontop Hall
Pontop Hall
The Grade II Listed, Pontop Hall is believed to date from C17th, built by the Meaburne family. The oldest part of the building on the left side It came into the Swinburne family through the marriage of Thomas Swinburne and Mary Thornton (nee Meaburne) who had inherited the hall from her grandfather, Anthony Meaburne, in 1758. Swinburne's lived at Pontop Hall until 1854 when the property was acquired by Joseph Nicholson. Joseph Nicholson's two sons, George and Hedley Nicholson married sisters Jane Matilda (Swinburn) Murray and Georgina Roberta Murray who were themselves the daughters of John Murray and Elizabeth Swinburn of Edmundbyers, Durham.

In the late C18th, Pontop Hall was used as a refuge where French priests were given aid and shelter in the religious rebellions of the French Revolution. Priests attended mass at a chapel in the loft space which is now one of seven bedrooms in the property. The chapel was later moved to nearby Crook Hall (later, Ushaw College).
