Van Diemans Land
Van Diemans Land
The name of the field according to Alfriston's 1842 tithe map that lies at southern tip of the parish east of the Cuckmere River. Its name most likely derives its distance from the village centre though the shape of the field itself shows an element of similarity with the island of Tasmania , for which Van Diemans Land is its original name. Part of the field has been lost to the building of the embankments just visible on the left.
