"Created in memory of East End residents killed in the Second World War, the Hermitage Riverside Memorial Garden sits on the former site of Hermitage Wharf.
The wharf was destroyed in a firebomb raid in December 1940, and when it came up for redevelopment in the late 1990s, Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act was used to make the developers of a nearby block of flats create a Memorial Park, memorial and riverside walkway as a memorial to the civilians killed."
