This was originally built by Sir John Savile in 1577, evidently replacing an earlier house as he was born here in 1545. This house included a private chapel (LinkExternal link. It is listed Grade II, and the listing details state that it was probably extended by the Akroyd family in 1598.
When Arthur Comfort wrote about it in 1913 it was 'in a sad state of repair'.
