Conifer flowers
Brightly coloured tips on the shoots of an ornamental conifer belie the wintry weather. I am no expert on conifers, but I understand that Chamecyparis and Thuja species produce both male and female flowers, and that the female ones are fertilised by wind-blown pollen, so they do not need to be showy to attract pollinating insects. I am reliably informed that these are male flowers, and that the red colour is the pollen. If anyone can identify the species I'd be pleased to hear from them.
