Grave of George Walby
Grave of George Walby
The inscription on this stone confirms the stereotype of the industrious English dissenter of the 18th century. Excluded from the gentry-dominated universities of Oxford and Cambridge on the grounds of their non-Anglicanism, they were a religious minority with no prospect of a career in professions requiring a religious oath of loyalty to the Anglican Church. Like the Jews, they were therefore thrown back on their own resourcefulness, founding dissenter academies to educate their brethren in a more utilitarian education compared with that of the universities. They fully embraced the Scientific Revolution, applying its discoveries in the pursuit of self-improvement (i.e. personal enrichment) and the common good. Dissenters played a disproportionate role in creating the Industrial Revolution and with it the rise of the English middle classes, who by the middle of the 19th century shared political power with the aristocracy.
