The Main Event, River Arkaig
The Main Event, River Arkaig
The River Arkaig has a reputation as a bit of a one-rapid-wonder, reflected in the name of that rapid being "The Main Event". It's a short river with a disproportionately long shuttle along the side of Loch Lochy and up the Dark Mile to Loch Arkaig. But that Loch is the key - being lake-fed, the Arkaig will hold its level for a long time after the last rainfall or snowmelt and, conversely, it won't suddenly come up on you in a storm or rapid temperature rise so it is often a safe bet when other rivers are too low or too high. It is also a trip you can often paddle in bright sunshine after the storm has passed. As seen here, other rivers were dropping quickly, but the Arkaig still held a considerable volume, making it worth our while to take out and scramble through the infernal rhododendrons with our kayaks to put back on and run it again. The rapid starts below the old weir behind the island on the left of the picture, and is bouncy right from the start, making it hard work to get the line. Several lines are possible at this level, the critical thing being to avoid the large stopper river right (centre of the photo). A line down the centre of the fall, heading left works well, or a slide and boof far river left. It's also possible to slide sideways off the tongue in the middle (in front of the sunlit tree on the photo) and into the fast water below, though a good brace may be necessary to stay upright. There's flat water below and a huge eddy (where the photographer is stood) to pick up any debris resulting from the occasional carnage...
