Ledge drop on Stonesdale Beck
Ledge drop on Stonesdale Beck
Ditch paddling at its finest involves tiny spate becks that aren't in any guidebook which preserves the spirit of adventure. Stonesdale Beck (also, for a short stretch on the 1:25000 map, known as Startindale Gill) is not an especially challenging paddle in its upper reaches, but is very hard to catch with enough water, let alone in sunshine too. Thus it is very rarely done and provided an unexpected bit of spectator sport for the farm personnel on the bridge. In its lower reaches, the beck becomes tree-infested and ends in an 8m waterfall that needs a lot more water to be runnable, usually done by walking up from the River Swale below.
