Former Bakewell Almshouses
On the corner of South Church Street and Church Alley. Now containing three houses, the building dates from 1709 when there were six separate dwellings, hence the six front doors. Each of the original dwellings had one tiny room downstairs, and one upstairs. There was no kitchen, bathroom or toilet.
The Manners family, Dukes of Rutland from 1703, maintained the almshouses until 1920. They gave the building (and the adjacent town hall) to the trustees who had been running the charity.
Financial problems caused the dwellings to become derelict and unfit for habitation by 2001. They were rescued and restored by the trustees in 2004-2006 at a cost of £325,000 which was funded by donations and grants. The three larger dwellings here now combine modern facilities with many historical features.
