Markham Grange Steam Museum - No difficulty baffles great zeal
This quote from Admiral John (Jackie) Fisher well applies to this ingenious rig. The big red object is the flywheel from the Goddard & Massey beam engine that is laid flat with the crankshaft and crank lying vertically. The inboard main bearing is above the wheel and is heavily corroded after many years in a static condition al fresco. The museum's volunteers had devised this planetary rig that rotates freely around the shaft, clearing the crank and carries a fan cooled bench grinder that is gradually improving this bearing. It is hoped that the job can be finished satisfactorily with this rig but there is a fall back position that will allow the shaft to be finish machined in the horizontal position. When this engine is finished the museum's owner will have achieved his ambition of acquiring and running a stationary beam engine (there is already a marine side lever beam engine on display).
