This is an example of Managed Retreat. In 1995 the sea wall was deliberately breached in several places the tide being checked by a low earth sea wall a couple of hundred metres inland. The bulk of the old sea wall takes the energy out of stormy waves but the new saltmarsh lagoon acts as a sump come safety valve to prevent flooding of more valuable property elsewhere. To maintain the sea wall would have cost £500,000 the new sea wall and breaching the old one cost £60,000 and recreated a more natural TL9806 : Transition from land to sea
