NY9728 : Shooting butts on Monks Moor
taken 10 years ago, 4 km NE of Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham, England
Shooting butts on Monks Moor
A track ascends from the minor road east of Monks Moor, providing access to a series of shooting stations, form which shots are fired southwards into Horden Allotment. Each butt is accompanied by a small stile, as there is some interest in retrieving (and no doubt eating) any wildlife unfortunate enough to have been caught in the shower of shotgun pellets. The track has been maintained with a bed of small stone on the steeper part of the ascent, but up here this has clearly been deemed unnecessary as the four-wheel drive vehicle used to save the legs of the paying clients can gain enough traction on the reduced gradient. The estate won't be worrying about the shooting party getting their feet wet, nor about random geographers who are in the less fortunate position of making the ascent on foot. After all - it's going to be much boggier further up...
