Devil's Den from the bridleway in Clatford Bottom
Devil's Den from the bridleway in Clatford Bottom
View south-west from the bridleway that runs up Clatford Bottom from the A4 road to Fyfield Down. The stone structure in the grassy field is a reconstructed Neolithic monument, known as the Devil's Den. The Natural England signs next to the gates that provide (permissive) access to the Devil's Den field say that the Scheduled Monument is the remains of a Neolithic chambered long barrow. It describes the field as 'recently converted grassland' - and indeed photos from about a decade ago show the monument isolated in an arable field. The pile of sarsen stone in the foreground is typical of this part of the downs, and is the same kind of stone used in the various Neolithic monuments in this part of Wiltshire.
