J2966 : Coned-off hard shoulder, M1, Ballyskeagh
taken 10 years ago, near to Ballyskeagh, Co Down, Northern Ireland
Work started during towards the end of 2013 on the first motorway service area in Northern Ireland. It will be between the Ballyskeagh and Tullynacross Bridges on the M1. Approval was given after a successful appeal to the Planning Appeals Commission. There were many conditions attached to the approval but the following particularly took my attention: “No vehicular or pedestrian access shall be made to the site from any nearby road (other than the motorway) or the access lane to Bracken Bank House at any time before or during the construction of the development nor at any time thereafter. . . . . . Vehicular access to and from the development shall be by way of the adjoining motorway carriageway only and shall be constructed to the satisfaction of the Department”.
