Beech roots and malmstone exposure, Short Lythe, Selborne
This beech tree's roots are hanging on to an exposure of the (upper greensand) malmstone in the steep side of the valley. 'Malm' means 'chalky rock'. This hanger is called Short Lythe (with Long Lythe a bit further on down the valley to the north-east) and is owned by the National Trust.
