This water tower is located in an area that is described on the OS 1:25,000 map as 'Camp Site (dis)'. This is the site of the officers camp of the now disused Matching airfield about 3/4 km to the west, where a United States Air Force bomber group was based for part of WWII. Many Nissen and Romney camp huts have apparently been reclad for light commercial use.
