Syre Church in Strathnaver
This corrugated iron church was erected in 1891 as a Free Church mission, to serve the scattered community of shepherds and ghillies in these remote Sutherland hills. It may well have been produced by the Glasgow firm of Frederick Braby, as the detail of the roof ridge matches examples shown in their catalogue of 1893.
At the beginning of the 20th century the congregation elected to join with the United Free Church, and when that denomination reunited with the established church in 1929 Syre finally passed to the Church of Scotland. Information from Nick Thomson's "Corrugated iron buildings" (Shire, 2011, pp 28-9).
