Ventilation shaft
This is the ventilation shaft for the tunnel under Crown Street which carried Stephenson's famous train the Rocket. Parliament gave permission for the Manchester & Liverpool Railway to be built in 1826. Passenger trains started at the Crown Street Station in Liverpool and terminated at Water Street in Manchester, it was opened on 15th September, 1830. Crown Street station, down a deep cutting, was closed when Lime Street was opened.
