TL3854 : Rebuilding a bridge on the Varsity Line

taken 10 years ago, near to Comberton, Cambridgeshire, England

Rebuilding a bridge on the Varsity Line
Rebuilding a bridge on the Varsity Line
Built in the 1860s to carry horse-drawn traffic, the bridges over the Bedford and Cambridge railway are too weak for much modern traffic and some have been removed (see, for example, TL3555 : Soon to be dismantled railway bridge and TL3555 : Former railway bridge and a view towards Kingston). The trackbed either side of the former Lord’s Bridge station is used as a road by the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory and the bridge carrying Comberton Road is being strengthened with a substantial blue-brick pier which narrows the trackbed to single-vehicle width. Bob Jones's TL3854 : Disused railway south of Comberton shows the bridge as it was, TL3854 : Bridge repairs at Comberton Road one of the new brick parapets.
