Joining Staffordshire with Derbyshire, Tutbury Bridge now carries the A511 road from Markfield to Forton. The remains of an old wooden bridge upstream of the present one can sometimes be seen, it is said. Near here coins were discovered by workmen dredging the Dove on 1st June 1831 and more during succeeding days until on 8th June a huge hoard of many different coins were found. The authorities were slow to act and many of the coins were spirited away before action could be taken. In Tutbury Church is preserved a notice forbidding any further searching for coins. One story is that Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, fleeing from Edward II after the battle of Burton Bridge in 1321, left the coins hidden in the Dove but never returned to collect them. Time taken 11.32 am GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).
