HMS Cavalier - engine room
This Second World War destroyer was built by J Samuel White of Cowes and commissioned in 1944. She is currently preserved at Chatham but spent some years in Hebburn and was photographed there shortly before the long tow to Chatham. I know the engineer who co-ordinated her preparation and tow and he allowed two of us to spend a large chunk of a Saturday wandering around usually closed areas with torches and a big flash gun.
She had 40,000 shaft horsepower on two shafts turned by Parsons single reduction geared turbines. This gave her a speed of 37 knots. This is the machinery control stand down on the engine room floor plates. We also saw the two boilers in two separate boiler rooms and found a Brotherhood torpedo charging compressor - a rare item indeed.
