SE5989 : The moor boundary line

taken 10 years ago, 4 km NNW of Carlton, North Yorkshire, England

The moor boundary line
The moor boundary line
This fence line across Helmsley Moor separates the improved land to the left from the open heather moor to the right. Both are important, one for agriculture and the other for grouse shooting on the Feversham estate. The highest parts of the Tabular Hills are mostly capped by a layer of sandstone, producing an acid soil more suited to heather than cropland. The change to more fertile limestone as one heads south is not well defined.
