Winterbourne Farm Pumping Station
Winterbourne Farm Pumping Station
This pumping station is part of the Environment Agency's West Berks Groundwater Scheme. Constructed in the 1970s it is a series of pumped boreholes which augment low flowing rivers in times of drought.
It seems odd when all we hear about recently is flooding, but when water levels are low it becomes desirable to maintain a minimum flow in some rivers for health, environmental and amenity reasons.
The scheme hasn't been needed in recent years, but it is kept in full working order because who knows when it could be called upon.
