Ruthven Barracks Mound
Is the site of Ruthven Hanoverian Barracks natural or artificial? Some hold that it is a natural relic formed by the retreat of the glaciers at the end of the last ice age. Others believe the mound to be an artificial motte constructed c.1229 as the base for the Castle of Ruthven, the seat of the Cummings, Lords of Badenoch. This castle was destroyed in 1451 and rebuild eight years later. The second castle was badly damaged in 1689. Completed in 1721 Fort Ruthven, the present barracks, housed a company of Hanoverian infantry. It was destroyed by the Jacobites in 1746 and has been derelict ever since.
