Cars crossing Swinford Toll Bridge
Swinford bridge was opened in 1769. It was part of a turnpike road extending to the west. This eventually became the A40. The bridge became less important as an east-west route when the Eynsham bypass was built in 1936.

Collection of the tolls causes traffic jams at busy times and there have been numerous attempts to scrap them.

The only other toll bridge across the Thames upstream of London is at Whitchurch. See Link
