TQ2982 : National Temperance Hospital (1)
taken 10 years ago, near to Camden Town, Camden, England
Situated close to Euston railway station, St James’ Gardens is bounded by Cardington Street to the east and north and gives access to Hampstead Road on the west. The gardens originally opened in 1788 as the new burial ground for St James’ Piccadilly, but became a public garden in 1887. Some headstones and memorials remain, but many are now badly eroded and identification can be difficult.
According to press reports, the gardens are under threat of obliteration as part of the HS2 high-speed rail project. Demolition is also likely for the adjacent National Temperance Hospital, which borders the gardens to the north and closed in 1990.
