Moorburn
Moorburn
Burning off the old dead grass and heather on moorland and rough grazing takes place every spring - weather permitting. It encourages new growth, and within 2 or 3 weeks the burnt areas will be noticeably greener and lusher than neighbouring unburnt stretches of moorland.
This was a well conducted and carefully controlled moorburning which was carried out without incident. However there is always a risk of the wind rising or changing direction unexpectedly leading to a fire 'getting away' from it's handlers, and springtime can be an extremely busy time of year for the local fire service.
