South Shields lifeboat and Jubilee Memorial
South Shields lifeboat "Tyne" was built in 1833. It is one of the oldest lifeboats in the world. It was retired from service in the late 19th Century, after saving more than 1,000 lives, and handed over to the town council who installed it as a permanent monument to the town's lifeboat men.

In 2013 "Tyne" was removed for restoration. It returned to its memorial site early in 2014.

The clock tower behind is the Jubilee Memorial, installed in honour of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887.
