Hanbury Hall and parterre
Hanbury Hall and parterre
Hanbury Hall was built by the wealthy chancery lawyer Thomas Vernon between 1701 and 1706. The parterre was designed and completed around the same time by George London. In the 1770s Emma Vernon swept away the formal gardens, including the parterre, and landscaped the park in the up-to-date fashion of the time. It is most likely that these changes were carried out by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown as the family were in contact with him through Emma's husband, Henry Cecil, 1st Marquess of Exeter. The National Trust restored a great deal of the formal early 18th Century gardens in the 1990s and the 21st century visitor can now enjoy the meticulously planted parterre once again.
