The Hoylake lifeboat station is one of the oldest on the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland and was established in 1803 by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board and was taken over by the R.N.L.I. in 1894. According to a list supplied by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, the Hilbre Island and Hoylake lifeboats rescued 459 lives between 1840 and 1894.
