To the right is the prominent bay of the Cavendish Laboratory (1873) on the west side of The New Museums Site, the home of the science laboratories and associated Museums established on the old University Botanical Gardens in 1784. James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), who was a prominent physicist, became the first professor of Experimental Physics at the University in 1871. He was fundamental in the design and layout of the laboratory which was funded by William Cavendish, the 7th Duke of Devonshire.

The Cavendish faces the wall of Corpus Christi College (founded 1352) across the narrow confines of Free School Lane – in fact Corpus Christi thought it was so narrow that they attempted to sue the University for right of ancient lights!
