Mrs Russell collected and supported the work of many artists. Just before war broke out in 1939, she transformed the original entrance hall of Mottisfont into a grand saloon, commissioning artist and writer Rex Whistler to paint it in Gothic trompe-l’oeil style.

This extraordinary room was his last and finest piece before he was killed on active service in France.
