Britain's first Dawn Redwood
Britain's first Dawn Redwood
The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) was thought to have been extinct for 5 million years until a chance discovery in 1946. Acting on a tip-off and sight of some fragmentary material, Professor Cheng of the National Central University, China, sent an expedition to the remote village of Mo-tao-chi in Szechuan province. The resultant specimens collected from a stand of recently-discovered, unidentified trees were confirmed to be living examples of a tree which hitherto had only been known through fossil remains.
To cut a long story short, which you can read in full here LinkExternal link , this tree on the south-western edge of the Lake was germinated from seed obtained from China in 1949 and is the first Dawn Redwood to grow on British soil since the Mesozoic era. It was designated one of the 50 ‘Great British Trees’ in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee in 2002.
