Silvertown: The former Tate Institute
Sir Henry Tate (1819-1899) was a philanthropic Victorian sugar magnate. Besides donating his art collection to establish the Tate Gallery TQ3078 : Tate Britain, Millbank, London, in 1887 he ordered the construction of this sadly neglected little building opposite his Silvertown sugar works for the benefit of his workers. The Institute closed in 1933 and the building was sold to be used as the local library until 1961. It can be found at the junction of Wythes Road with Albert Road. The Tate sugar business merged with the Lyle organization to form Tate & Lyle in 1921.
