Granite boulders south of Fhionnphort
Boulders and granite tors stud the landscape on the Ross of Mull, separated by boggy valleys and hollows where clay soil has weathered from the feldspars in the granite. To the south and on the coast, granite bedrock is well displayed, but here the rock is better covered and suports more vegetation including dwarf willows, as well as grasses, sedges, heather and ferns. In the background the Sound of Iona marks a major geological boundary, with much older rocks making up the island itself.
