Roches Moutonnées by track to Fidden
The Ross of Mull is formed from a very pink/red granite intruded towards the end of the Caledonian orogeny, 421±5 million years ago during the Devonian. The Moine series country rock above it has been eroded away, and the most recent erosive episode, the Quaternary glaciations, have smoothed the hard rocks, leaving the less jointed parts standing high as roches moutonnées. Where the rock is even more resistant, it forms distinctive tors. Soils between the rocks are formed from the decay of the granite - feldspars weathering to clay minerals and quartz remaining as sand. The hollows retain moisture and support boggy plant communities including sedges, bog myrtle, dwarf willows and a variety of wild flowers including many orchids. On drier islands and the edges of the rocks, bracken (the world's most invasive plant species) has no more than a foothold. Being grazed by sheep, it's important to check for ticks after you've walked through this country, especially in shorts weather!
