NT5582 : Balgone Windmill

Balgone Windmill
Derelict 17th century vaulted windmill near North Berwick. Vaulted tower mills are rarely found outside Scotland. Here, an underground vault extends 20ft out from the base of the tower. There were two doors, one of which is now blocked up. The major part of the tower is still sound although about a third has collapsed from the top. It was originally a barley mill although it probably fell into disuse in the 18th century and had ceased to function as a windmill by 1799. It was heightened by about 10ft to become a dovecot.
