Blackridge Water Treatment Works
Shown but unnamed on the OS map, behind these gates are a range of modern buildings, protected by perimeter fences, CCTV razor wire and Infra-Red lighting. Could this be Scotland's 'Area 51'...? Apart for a sign on the gate suggesting it is dangerous to enter, no other information is available. Delving into the matter further, it was discovered that Scottish Water own this site, and is a covered reservoir to supply fresh water to the good people of Edinburgh. The days of open reservoirs leading directly to taps appear to be over, as the risk of contamination - whether natural or by criminal act - is too much of a risk, hence the additional security measures. No wonder it costs so much.
