NS3681 : Green Hairstreak

taken 10 years ago, 3 km from Balloch, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

Green Hairstreak
Green Hairstreak
(Callophrys rubi)

Of the native British species, only this one has a green underside; the colour is the result of diffraction by microscopic wing-scales rather than a pigment. The photograph shows the black-and-white banding on the legs and, in particular, on the clubbed antennae.

This one was in a boggy area of rushes, near (as the map shows) the edge of an area of woodland; see NS3681 : Footpath following the edge of the woods.
