Sidcup By-Pass, New Eltham, SE9
With residential housing in Aldwick Close providing a backdrop, this is a view of the bypass (the A20) as it heads towards Sidcup (which it skirts on this suburb's southern side).
In the 1950s, through to at least the 1990s the road from here to Chislehurst was full width and usable by vehicles despite being a bit rough in places, so not much traffic used it. There were plenty of conker trees for the likes of me. Walking along Kemnal Road in autumn was sometimes quite spectacular with the yellow/golden/red/brown falling leaves, especially as sunbeams broke through the leaf canopy of the already mature deciduous tree.
On the corner on the left at the junction with the A20 was a derelict house which we called "the old bombed house" (though whether it had been bombed, I doubt). It was a bit spooky, and certainly not safe for us to play in and around. On the left also, walking from the A20, were cricket fields, owned by the National Dock Labour Board. On summer Saturdays and Sundays I used to watch through the fence in the 1950s. It was the first time I ever saw West Indian men ... smashing sixes over the fence, occasionally relying on me to retrieve the ball.
